LGBTQ+ History Month: LGBTQ+ History Month programming for ERGs services for ERGs.

As of 1970Last reviewed

Distinct from Pride. October is for history โ€” Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, legal battles, queer elders. Education, not party.

Why It Matters

More than a calendar moment.

1994year LGBTQ+ History Month was founded by Rodney Wilson.
1969year of the Stonewall Uprising.
Oct 11National Coming Out Day, central to the month.

LGBTQ+ History Month was founded in 1994 by Missouri high school history teacher Rodney Wilson, with October chosen because it already contained National Coming Out Day (October 11) and the anniversary of the 1979 and 1987 Marches on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The month is intentionally distinct from Pride in June: Pride is celebration, October is curriculum โ€” the history most LGBTQ+ employees were never taught in school.

That curriculum has serious weight. Stonewall (1969), the early ACT UP and AIDS Coalition organizing, the founding of GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign, Lawrence v. Texas (2003), Obergefell (2015), Bostock (2020) โ€” the legal and movement history that shapes whether queer employees have rights at work today. The GLBT Historical Society, the ONE Archives, and the Smithsonian all publish workplace-ready material specifically for October programming.

What Not To Do

The LGBTQ+ History pitfalls.

What sinks LGBTQ+ History programming isn't usually a missing speaker โ€” it's a misread of the moment. The three misses worth naming out loud.

01

Recycling June's Pride programming.

Different month, different point. October is education; June is celebration.

02

Skipping the AIDS chapter.

The AIDS crisis is foundational to modern LGBTQ+ history. Programming that skips it is incomplete.

03

No queer elders in the room.

Bring in voices who lived the history. Younger queer employees rarely get that access.
