NCOD is a day of visibility — but coming out is personal. Don't pressure anyone. Celebrate those who choose to share.

Why It Matters

More than a calendar moment.

1988year NCOD was founded.
46%of LGBTQ+ workers are still closeted at work (HRC, 2023).
Oct 11anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

National Coming Out Day was founded in 1988 by activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary, on the one-year anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The premise has stayed consistent: visibility shifts hearts and policy when it's freely chosen — and the day is meaningless, or harmful, if anyone is pressured into it.

For LGBTQ+ ERGs, the cleanest October 11 posture is to make work safe enough that being out is a real option. The day reads as authentic when the year-round infrastructure backs it up.

What Not To Do

The NCOD pitfalls.

What sinks NCOD programming isn't usually a missing speaker — it's a misread of the moment. The three misses worth naming out loud.

01

Pressure to come out for content.

No internal comms team should ask closeted employees to share a story on Oct 11.

02

Day of celebration, year of silence.

A loud NCOD with weak harassment response the rest of the year reads as marketing.

03

Outing by accident.

Photos, RSVPs, and Slack channels can out people who aren't out at work. Plan with care.

Etsy’s Queer@ and Parents ERGs Host Inclusive Parenting Workshop

In honor of National Coming Out Day on October 11th, our Parents and Queer@ Etsy employee resource groups co-hosted an event with @modernhealthco. The workshop, led by therapist Stephanie Preston-Hughes, focused on inclusive parenting and tips for creating safe and welcoming environments for your children as they approach the age of discovery. The best time to start building an inclusive space is now, so we discussed what we can do – and what we should avoid – in order to help our kids feel safe and comfortable expressing themselves to us. We’re grateful to our ERGs for organizing events like these that help us not only to maintain inclusive practices within our workplace, but also provide us tips for how we can reinforce inclusion in our own homes. #LifeatEtsy #nationalcomingoutday #LGBTQIA
