Filipino American History Month: programming for ERGs services for ERGs.

As of 1970Last reviewed

FAHM is often overlooked within AAPI Month in May. October centers Filipino American contributions specifically โ€” first US presence dates to 1587.

Why It Matters

More than a calendar moment.

1587year of first recorded Filipino presence in what is now the US.
4.4MFilipino Americans โ€” the third-largest Asian American group.
1992year FAHM was founded by the Filipino American National Historical Society.

Filipino American History Month was established in 1992 by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and federally recognized by Congress in 2009. The October date marks the first documented Filipino landing in what is now the United States โ€” October 18, 1587 in Morro Bay, California โ€” nearly 35 years before the Mayflower.

AAPI Heritage Month covers a wide range of communities; October is the month built specifically for Filipino American history and contributions โ€” the colonial relationship with the United States (the 1898 Treaty of Paris, the Philippine-American War, the 1946 Treaty of Manila), the labor organizing of Larry Itliong and the Manong generation, and the 1965 Delano Grape Strike that Filipino farmworkers started before Cesar Chavez joined.

That labor history matters because it's the most consistently erased part of the US labor movement story. FANHS, the Welga Project at UC Davis, and the Pinoy Teach curriculum all publish materials designed for workplace use. Programming that includes the colonial story, the Manong generation, and contemporary Filipino American leaders โ€” in tech, healthcare, arts, and policy โ€” lands better than a lumpia-and-tinikling celebration alone.

What Not To Do

The FAHM pitfalls.

What sinks FAHM programming isn't usually a missing speaker โ€” it's a misread of the moment. The three misses worth naming out loud.

01

Folding into AAPI Month.

Filipino American history has its own month for a reason. Don't recycle May.

02

Skipping the colonial story.

The US-Philippines history is uncomfortable. It's also central. Don't sand it off.

03

Stereotyping food and dance only.

Lumpia and tinikling are great. So are organizers, scientists, novelists, and labor leaders.
