Jewish American Heritage Month: programming for ERGs services for ERGs.
JAHM honors 350+ years of Jewish American history. In the current moment, it also asks for honest conversation, real safety, and visible institutional support β not just a logo on a deck.

More than a calendar moment.
Jewish American Heritage Month was first proclaimed in 2006 under President George W. Bush following sustained advocacy from the Jewish Museum of Florida and the American Jewish Committee. It honors more than 370 years of Jewish life in what is now the United States, beginning with the 23 Sephardic Jews who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654. For Jewish ERGs, the month is a chance to widen what colleagues think βJewishβ means at work β not a single Ashkenazi narrative, but Sephardic, Mizrahi, Ethiopian, Black, Latine, and biracial Jewish employees too.
The Pew Research Center's βJewish Americans in 2020β study put the community at roughly 7.5 million, with about one in six Jewish adults identifying as a person of color or as part of a non-white household β a number that climbs sharply in younger cohorts. Programming that frames Jewish identity as one monolithic experience flattens the actual community, and Jewish ERGs across companies have been pushing leadership for sharper internal representation in language, imagery, and speaker selection.
The JAHM pitfalls.
What sinks JAHM programming isn't usually a missing speaker β it's a misread of the moment. The three misses worth naming out loud.
Assuming "Jewish" means one thing.
Jewish identity spans race, religion, and politics. The month should reflect that range.
Avoiding the room because it's politically charged.
Skipping JAHM to dodge controversy is itself a statement. Plan it well, host it carefully, do it anyway.
Ignoring antisemitism the other 11 months.
If your incident response to antisemitism is weak, a heritage month won't paper over it. Pair JAHM with a real policy review.
