As of 1970Last reviewed

Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Lights. Don't lump into “holiday season” generic programming — center Jewish voices specifically.

Why It Matters

More than a calendar moment.

8 nightsof candle lighting.

2 centuries BCEthe events Hanukkah commemorates.

Hanukkah is, in religious terms, a relatively minor holiday in the Jewish calendar — commemorating the 2nd century BCE rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the eight-night candle-lighting that followed. Its outsized cultural profile in the United States is largely a function of its proximity to Christmas, and Jewish ERG members are usually quick to flag that conflation. The Pew Research Center's Jewish Americans in 2020 study makes the point directly: Hanukkah is not the Jewish Christmas, and treating it that way flattens the actual religion.

That distinction shapes good December programming. A short, Jewish-ERG-led latke or sufganiyot moment with the candle-lighting story told plainly (the Maccabean revolt, the menorah, the eight nights) lands better than a Christmas/Hanukkah mashup or a generic “holiday season” email that buries Hanukkah inside it. ADL and the American Jewish Committee both publish workplace-ready Hanukkah materials specifically aimed at avoiding the conflation.

What Not To Do

The Hanukkah pitfalls.

What sinks Hanukkah programming isn't usually a missing speaker — it's a misread of the moment. The three misses worth naming out loud.

01

"Happy Holidays" only.

Mentioning Hanukkah by name signals you actually see your Jewish employees.

02

Christmas + Hanukkah mashup decor.

They are different religions, different stories, different observances. Don't blend them.

03

Ignoring Hanukkah because Christmas is "easier."

Default-Christian calendars exclude Jewish employees. Fix the defaults.
