Why It Matters

National Disability Employment Awareness Month was first observed in 1945 — originally as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week” — and expanded to a full month in 1988. It's coordinated by the US Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), and the month asks a specific question every October: how good is your company at hiring, accommodating, retaining, and promoting disabled employees? It is a data month, not a vibes month.

The numbers from BLS and ODEP consistently surface the same gap. Labor force participation for people with disabilities sits around 24‘28% versus roughly 67% for non-disabled adults, and disabled workers face higher unemployment in every recovery cycle. Meanwhile, the Job Accommodation Network's annual research has shown for over a decade that the majority of workplace accommodations cost employers nothing or under $500. The pattern is structural, not financial — ATSes that screen out disabled candidates, managers who don't know how to grant accommodation requests, and performance systems that penalize different working styles.
